She was once taken as a prisoner in Iran and during her imprisonment there, she had the continuous support of a man named Bahman Ghobadi who is a film director. Bahman had written an emotional love letter in an attempt to have Roxana freed. People have been speculating as to what the man's relationship to Roxana was ever since.
Furthermore, in one of her interviews, Roxana mentioned that she was prohibited from telling her parents and boyfriends of her whereabouts during her arrest. Roxana was born on April 26, 1977, in Belleville, New Jersey. Her parents belonged to two different ethnicities and countries. Her father was an Iranian while her mother was Japanese. She did well in her studies and had a knack for them as she gained triple master degrees from three different universities. She won Miss North Dakota in 1997 and was the top ten contestants in Miss America.
Her career as a journalist began in September 2000 in her hometown. She moved to Iran in 2003 and started working as a freelance journalist for the BBC, FOX News and National Public Radio. On 31 January 2009, she was arrested by the Iranian government on a false charge of spying for the CIA. She was held by the Iranian government for more than 3 months and was released on 11 May 2009.

From the experience she gained from her captivity in Iran, she wrote a book on it titled ‘Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran’. She made a comeback in journalism in 2013 as a correspondent and senior producer for Al Jazeera America. Over the course of her career, she has earned various awards including Medill Medal of Courage, NCCAQ Award of Valor and the Ilaria Alpi Freedom of the Press Award.
